What Every Ezine Owner Should Know About Unsold Ad Space
The deadline approaches and your ad STILL has not sold. What are you going to do? Many publishers would leave the ad unsold, but some publishers have found "insider" ways to make money with their hard-to-sell ads. Let's face it, if the ad is unused at publication, you have made zero dollars. I'd rather have a money saver or a potential money-maker in the ad slot than nothing at all. You have four great options for benefiting from your unsold ad spaces. OPTION 1 - BARTER THE AD SPACE FOR SOMETHING YOU NEED You may be able to get products and services you need in exchange for the ad. What do you need or want? New website graphics? Software? Jewelry? Whatever you're thinking of buying, try trading for it first. Contact possible trading partners and make your barter proposal. A website where you may find barter partners is http://www.craigslist.org . View some of the posts under the Barter category then post your own ad. If you can barter instead of buying, that ad just saved you money. OPTION 2 - SELL YOUR AD SPACE AT AUCTION You can sell your ad for whatever you can get at auction for it. One of the most popular places to auction ezine ad space is http://www.ezineadauction.com Post a listing that describes your list to potential bidders. If it doesn't sell by auction deadline, that ad slot may still be able to make you money. How? Ask yourself "What can I show my subscribers that will help them solve their problems?" Those are the products and services you may want to promote in the ad slot on a pay-per-sale basis. OPTION 3 PROMOTE AN AFFILIATE PROGRAM Search for a product or service your list would likely want. For example, if your subscribers are small business owners, find tools, ebooks and software to help them. Find companies who provide these things and check to see if they have affiliate programs. Affiliate programs pay you a commission when your referrals buy. Choose an affiliate program that matches your readership and that's high quality. Whatever you promote reflects on your company. Imagine giving your list a gift full of valuable information. Your list will be impressed that you gave them something valuable. Furthermore, they may buy. Here's an example of this in action: An ezine owner gave me (and everyone on his list) a free teleseminar with a top marketer. The information was so useful that I bought the full marketing course. The marketer made money, the ezine owner made a commission and I got great information that helped my business. The way it works is, before your promotion, your joint venture partner agrees to track your giveaway. You give away something your readers can use, and if they buy from your joint venture partner, you get a referral fee. Some ezine owners are finding that their affiliate and joint venture promotions bring them more profits than selling ads. The downside of running a pay-per-sale promotion in the ad slot is you may find that your promotion doesn't work. Make the offer obsolete within a few days or by next week. By putting a time limit on it, I'll be more apt to act now instead of later. Don't overlook how powerful this tactic can be. Some of my most profitable weeks have resulted from running a limited time, special pr0motion of this type in my e-zine. PACKAGE IT AT A LOWER PRICE POINT This is a super strategy for service professionals such as consultants and coaches. As your subscriber, I know the way to get the BEST service from you would be to hire you one-on-one, but perhaps I can't afford that right now. BUT consider that I may likely be interested in lower-priced options such as group coaching, teleclasses, online seminars, or a manual/e-book. This is exactly how I became an e-book author. When I started my first e-zine, my main business was writing for corporate communications. After I gained a few thousand subscribers, I realized that my readers were mostly small business owners and entrepreneurs. So I began creating products and services geared toward them. And now I profit more from those each month than from my corporate work. PROMOTE A PRODUCT/SERVICE THAT COMPLEMENTS YOURS Do your readers and clients often ask you about a certain topic that's related to - but not exactly - what you offer? Then resell a resource that you heartily recommend and would put your reputation behind. For example, while my specialty is e-zines, I get many questions about creating and selling information products online. So I continually research credible resources on this topic to share with my readers. Many of the creators of these products offer a handsome commission on any sales I refer to them. Otherwise you'll blow the trust that you've worked so hard to build up in your readership. SELL AD SPACE AS IT SUITS YOU E-zine ads won't make you wealthy, but they can make for some handy extra c^sh. (I call it my "margarita money.") Most e-zines offer one sponsor ad at the top and several "classified" ads at the bottom. Sponsor ads typically cost three to five times more than the classified ad, but you'll see the ranges vary greatly. Start by offering ad specials to your own readers. Then also list your e-zine in the many e-zine advertising directories on the Web. These services help match advertisers with appropriate publishers just like you. (Need help? While your readers know these ads don't represent YOUR business, their quality will indirectly influence their perception of you. Ezines VS. Trade Journals As many people know Industry Trade Journals in America have gone through a tough time in recent years due to slowing of advertising dollars. In many industries this is the case. Many of us use to get free Industry Trade Journals, yet many have now gone out of business and others are being a little more particular than normal. Some send you questionnaires every three months to make sure you are interested and reading their material. Most companies DO NOT advertise in such trade journals. A few do, mostly for brand name recognition, although in my opinion it is a lot of money considering the much lower costs of Ezines and Internet Advertising. Some believe paper trade journals or Industry Rags as they are often called are waste of advertising money, even worse than attending some under attended trade shows. 7 Ways You Can Make a Huge Impression With Your Ezine Welcome Message Many times I receive a Welcome Message from someone after I subscribe to their ezine that leaves me wondering what I just jumped into. A welcome message is one of your first contacts with your subscriber, and it should say something that sets you apart from everyone else right at the get-go. It is, after all, one of your first impressions with prospective customers ? and first impressions absolutely do count on the internet. Not only is your welcome message a natural opportunity for you to connect with your subscribers, it's also your chance to make sure they remember you with positive anticipation so that they will be eager to open up your next message when it arrives. How to Choose a Good Newsletter Name Good newsletter names are usually 2-4 words. If shorter, they can't explain what your newsletter is about, and if longer, they will be hard to remember.
