Seeing Through Fear

Only I will remain." -Frank Herbert, Dune, "Litany Against Fear", 1965 There is one main obstacle holding people from living the life of their dreams. All successful people have faced it at one time in their lives. Many of us are currently facing it now, and that is where the challenge lies. If we allow this one thing to stop us, then we will not know how to enjoy this game of life. We will constantly have one thing to blame or another. We become the victims of our life; not the source. However, if we go through this obstacle, we will come out the other side far more victorious than we could ever imagine ourselves to be. How do we go beyond it? The trick is to see the irony behind it. This one main obstacle is fear, and it comes to everyone due to our human situation. We all have the need to look good and be appreciated by people. Fear comes when we believe that what we are going to do will lead to a loss of appreciation from others and in us being wrong (not looking good). If we look at fear properly, we will see a very funny thing. Everyone is actually living in the very same way! We are all afraid of looking bad in front of others. We are so busy trying to look good and fix up our act that we don't realize that everyone else is doing the same thing. They are too busy fixing up their act to care about you. They are scared that they are going to be found out. So we have a cycle of fear in which the very thing that they fear doesn't exist! People are afraid of other people finding them out, but there are no people who are going to find out what you are hiding because they are too busy hiding their flaws! Do you see the irony of fear now? We forget that we are living this life and that we will never come through this way again. Why don't we live to our maximum potential? Why do we let small things like fears get in our way? Are we going to run our whole lives according to whether we are looking good to people? You are in charge of your life. How you live this life is up to you! It is your responsibility to start to pick up the pieces and start to go beyond this fear. No one is looking at you, they are all too scared to care. Once this cycle of fear breaks, through observation, you are free! Free to be what you want to be! You are now free to create your life the way you want it to be. Embrace Change We all have a unique way of communicating our story, a way that reflects our life experience. The photographer uses a camera, the artist a brush, and the musician a melody or rhythm. Define Yourself With Confidence As a trainer of coaches I often teach my students to move beyond the skill of coaching into the skill of self-trusting. Having great mastery of a specific skill is important, but without self-mastery all we become are manipulators of open-ended questions. Coaching is much more than that. It should be obvious to you that any emotion based on love is positive while any emotion based on fear is negative. Examples of fear based emotions are feelings such as anger, depression, hopelessness, and worry. What most people simply don't understand is that they can consciously decide to experience the world from a perspective of love or fear; they don't have to experience fearful perceptions projected about them throughout the day. The lesson we needed to learn was that self-talk has a powerful affect on the results we achieve. We learned that the mind will manifest whatever we dwell on, be it negative or positive. I have to admit that at my age, I don't remember the exact title or exactly how the story goes, but I don't recall the idea in the story. Does Life Really Stink? One of my class fellows was really tensed, when asked the reason, he was really tensed over his future. It is a true fact that most of us despite a very good education remain uncertain of our future. Especially in a country like Pakistan where there is no job security whatsoever it may be, people are disillusioned. What we look for in a life? Financial security, professional stability, a good family life and for people of substance, peace of mind (certainly not supposed to be read as a piece of mind). All of us have our insecurities and in majority of cases, we spend our entire life dealing with our insecurities. Some would spend their entire life looking for love without knowing what it really is. Some of us spend their entire life just to earn money for at least two generations, we revert to God. However, majority of us live, rather they are forced to live a life without any direction totally aimless life where they accept whatever comes their way and are least concerned about living a better life. And probably that is why very few people would come up with a proper answer to the question. We hardly ever have time or energy to think about some thing as fickle as life. In fact we give in ourselves to our fate to such an extent that we refuse to bring any change in our life even if is well within our control. Its not that we cannot do anything to come out of the mess. It's just that we don't want to. Is Your Glass (Ceiling) Half Empty or Half Full? The infamous "glass ceiling" is blamed for business issues for women from poor salaries to lack of corporate advancement. This invisible barrier holds many women captive in unpleasant work environments, settling for pay which is far below industry averages, accepting weak titles and agreeing to poor advancement opportunities. Accepting Change Well I've finally done it...I turned my heat on. After shouting at the kids that it's not cold and making them dress like they are outside, I turned on the heat in the house. I finally gave in when I couldn't feel my fingers anymore while typing and the cat, Bogey, was sitting next to the desk sneezing continuously. I started thinking, hmmm he has fur and he's cold. Maybe it is cold. (One of those duh moments) I then looked at the temperature on my computer and saw it was 43 degrees. Well I guess it is time. How to Get Rid of Stinking Thinking Q: I seem to beat myself before I ever get started. I catch myself trying to talk myself out of doing anything because of all the obstacles I see. And then I end up regretting not doing anything and get more and more frustrated. A friend of mine pointed this pattern out to me, but neither one of us knows what to do about it. What should I do? Harness The Power Of Words In Your Life Speaking comes to most people as naturally as breathing. On many occasions our words are uttered without conscious thought; in fact we rarely stop and think about what we are saying. For instance such problems as irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis and even cancer have been felt to have such psychically based links. Our Worst Enemies Most of us love to think that our problems are the result of the actions or in-actions of others, economic conditions, timing and any number of other things outside our control. These things do in fact have a bearing on our situations. They are not however, the root cause. The real problem lies within! It Is All About Attitude! Why do we really need the experiences that we have to deal with in our day-to-day life? Does anyone know who can answer my question? Somehow, at heart I do know and understand the answer to this question. However, I have no discipline to do something about it in respect of applying the principle in dealing with my own life experiences. Such Is Life, And Its Getting Sucher And Sucher Problems, disappointments and trouble; the three skunks that sometimes think they are our children. At least they want to stay around long enough to give us a college education. But the education we get may be only half the story, See what you think!
